With Cosmos, Soma Labs introduces an excellent realtime audio looper that shines with very musical properties. Cosmos uses crossfades when switching effects on and off and when switching algorithms, so audible clicks are avoided. When switching algorithms, the contents of the sound memories are transferred to the next algorithm, where they are processed in a new way. This allows you to switch effects on and off at any time during a performance and use this as an expressive artistic technique. A reverse mode for playing back the recordings further enriches the intervention possibilities. Beyond the looping feature, Cosmos has an effects processor with four effects algorithms : Two Delays, Four Delays, Giant Reverb and Granular Delay, each with three variations. The transition between the effects is smooth. The sound design is rounded off by a less biting overdrive, gradually switchable highpass and Lowpass filters as well as a suppressor/compressor combination. Flowing soundscapes is exactly what Cosmos is all about and is therefore perfect for ambient and experimental music .
Soma offers free alternative firmwares that focus on pitch shifting, working with rhythmic material or a "quad performance". This expands the functionality of the basic version enormously and saves some an even more specialized additional device.
